2022 Is the Year Of Sex Positivity, And Here’s Why.

It’s extraordinarily obvious that over the last few years, sexual positivity has reached new peaks. With the surging popularity of the Call Her Daddy podcast, OnlyFans, and all sorts of new popular sex toys, the younger generations are taking new ownership of their sexuality more than ever before.

The sex toy industry grows 13% every single year, doubling in size every six years or so. We haven’t completely eliminated the stigma toward sex toys, but it’s clear that sexuality is being embraced and seen as a normal trait for everyone to have.

In 2022, 13% more of the 18+ US population owns at least 1 sex toy as compared to five years ago. Half of us have even used a sex toy in the last week. And a whopping 89% of the population at least knows about an online sex retailer. While 39% prefer to use sex toys alone, the industry expects to see a rise in this number in the future. Incorporating sex toys into a relationship also correlates with happiness in the relationship, with sex toy owners being 20% more likely to be happy with their relationship.

We’re also possibly seeing a potential adjustment in the true meaning of sexual positivity this year. Ever since COVID or so, there were some concerning developments in overselling sex to youth. For example, trends on TikTok lure youth into get-rich-quick ideas with stripping or OnlyFans. There were eye-opening reflections this year about how a ‘hoe phase’ seemed to empower previously, but reflecting back it’s clear how many of those moments were actually weak moments. Where people exploited an emotional vulnerability and now have to live with what’s happened.

We’re seeing a lot more warnings and disclaimers behind becoming a sex worker, and it seems to be the sex industry adjusting and taking steps in the right direction. Sex positivity can truly start being shaped as actual positivity, with a healthy mental awareness that it is still sex, the most intimate part of life.
